The Future of Stories in the AI Age

Are we authors doomed? AI can write our stories from a prompt, can come up with 'it's own ideas' for stories, and can generate pictures based on the stories.

ChatGPT writes my stories

Oy vay? What does the future portend? Can artificial intelligence replace human authors? Together with my dear friend Jeff Pulver, we decided to ask ChatGPT to come up with stories based on several ideas that I came up with during Storystorm (see my previous blog).

And although not all the stories that ChatGPT came up with were great, they were good. Of course they didn't end in the same way that I had envisioned, yet they were surprising in and of themselves.

Matching Art from Dall-E 2

Allon Sasson has volunteered to coax Dall-E 2 to come up with matching (more or less) cover art for every story. So here is the first. Ourboox has a new AI category! I hope to be 'producing' an e-book every day or two, with the 'help' of AI. And Allon Sasson.

Should we be worried, exciting? Fearful, nauseous? I don't know. Certainly within a few months or years, computers will become increasingly able to come up with even better stories of their own. On the other hand, a human touch will always be needed. I hope....

The Future

We can look at it like the beginning of animation a century ago, when people were in awe of a new technology that could replace movies with real objects and real people. And then the digital animation revolution which challenged the hand animation in so many ways. What will the future portent? Let's not just stand in awe. Let's jump right in!
